FIRE SCENE UPDATE: Tenement Teardown
7:02 PM: A reader wrote in to say that the tenement adjacent to the Hong Kong Supermarket collapsed at around 3 PM today. We stopped by the scene and noticed fire personnel clearing the site; DOB people were also there assessing the situation. Crime scene tape lines the sidewalks and Allen Street Mall, blocking pedestrians from walking anywhere near the site. Getting close is rather tough.
UPDATE 1:07 AM: We received an email with the following, “This is from a cop — There was asbestos in the building. But because of the rain last night [Thursday], and the streams of water, most of it got soaked up, so there’s no real danger anymore. All the residents of the buildings from 103 East Broadway to the Supermarket have been evacuated though.”
