Casa Mezcal at 86 Orchard Street
Back in late 2008, Eater first brought news that a Mexican restaurant-cum-cultural center was to occupy 86 Orchard Street (former home of Majestic Hosiery). It was reported at the time that the venture, dubbed Casa Mezcal, would maintain a four-level presence – cinema/live music in the basement, bar/restaurant on the main level, a gallery on the second floor, and a workshop on the third. Community Board 3 eventually granted its approval.

Initially slated for a summer 2009 launch, the Casa Mezcal site hasn’t really seen much visible action; security gates remained locked, and not many people going in and out. No longer. Obligatory plywood has recently taken up residence on the sidewalk, no doubt signaling the resumption of work within. Game on!
