Ashkara Out of Business
Another closure to report. After little more than three years serving Middle Eastern fare, Ashkara, the kosher pita joint at 189 East Houston, is now out of business. Dinner time the last few nights, the grub spot was completely dark. Signage and all. Inside, the place is a mess – table and chairs are gone and newspaper is scattered about the floor.

The bitter icing on this cake is the dangling “for rent” sign, affixed haphazardly to the door handle with a wee bit of twine. Calls to the phone number listed just ring forever. Too bad, they had great falafel.

UPDATE: Thanks to David Bilmas for pointing out that Ashkara is actually looking to open elsewhere in the neighborhood. He writes, “i spoke to them around christmas. they’re not closed just moving.”
