Update: Demolition of 5 Essex Street
As we speak, history is being dismantled and funneled through a demolition chute to a curbside dumpster. Indeed, the three-story building at 5 Essex Street, a onetime sanitarium and former home of Dembitzer Brothers Electronics and the Chinese New Taoism Association, is dying a slow death. About half the original structure remains on the lot. It should be gone pretty soon, to make way for another empty lot in the neighborhood.
