Painting the Neighborhood Crosswalks
The pock-marked streets of the Lower East Side are receiving more attention as of late. Well, somewhat. Saturday afternoon, the crosswalk painters were mobilized across the neighborhood. We caught up with them near the corner of Rivington and Essex. The crew – a trio of men and their machinery – moved westward at a snail’s pace, marking intersections and stopping traffic. And of course, there was the smell of melted synthetics.

It’s about time, too. So many crosswalks in the immediate vicinity are faded and chipped.
