Gaia, the Italian Cafe at 251 East Houston
The curtain of paper advertising a new Italian cafe has become a semi-permanent fixture at 251 East Houston. In the months after its window placement, notable activity had been pretty scarce. But that all changed in early December with the arrival of a new wooden nameplate. The cafe was officially christened Gaia, which means “earth.” And as previously reported, the cafe will offer authentic Italian fare “at your table.”

We caught up with the eponymous owner from Milan last week. It was in the days following the epic snowstorm, and she was shoveling the entryway in anticipation of a food and supplies delivery. We were informed that Gaia is slated to open by the end of January, and that the menu is still pending.
