The Pickle Guys Grinding Horseradish
The run-up to Passover is the first and only time of year when the Pickle Guys at 49 Essex (and Guss’ Pickles in years past) break out the sidewalk equipment and start grinding fresh horseradish. And it’s usually a big hit, generating long lines and wait times. Especially for people who procrastinate until the last day.

Each year, an employee dons a gas mask and loads dozens of horseradish roots into an industrial grinder. All day. The entire corner of Essex and Grand Streets reeks from it, yet always a great sight.
