From street level, the fate doesn’t appear too rosy for Sal’s, and a number of readers wrote in worried. A pair of loud leasing signs above the first floor windows announce corner store availability at 369 Broome Street starting January 1, 2012. Umberto’s itself, born on Mulberry Street in 1970, didn’t move too far away and is now settling into its new digs at 132 Mulberry. The new locale is merely two blocks south at Hester.
