Lower East Side Fixer-Upper, Circa 1958
People seem perpetually fascinated by apartment-fixer-upper stories. Just open the Real Estate section of the Times on Sundays and there’s usually the requisite “I changed my 350 square-foot studio into a palace” type article. It’s no recent phenomenon, though.

Check out this gem of a vintage video uncovered on YouTube. Dating back to 1958, the Something New from Something Old follows a fictional couple (Jack and Jill) as they re-decorate their Lower East Side apartment. The pad appears rather big for the area. Anyway, the audio on this clip sounds like something out of a Twilight Zone episode.
