El Sombrero on Stanton is Fine; Reopening Today
The Hat gave us all a bit of a mid-summer scare yesterday. We fielded a number of worried notes asking about the fate of the longtime Lower East Side Mexican joint at 108 Stanton Street. Security gates were rolled down, and the corner quiet.

Not to worry, though. El Sombrero was only closed for a wee bit, and should reopen later this morning at the usual time (10 am). At least according to the handwritten notice taped to the window.

El Sombrero, forever known to locals as The Hat, has been a neighborhood culinary staple since 1984. Open late night every night, the restaurant gained popularity as the perfect dispensary for killer margaritas, cheap eats, and large portions. The food isn’t amazing, but come for the drinks, and stay for the casual atmosphere and juke.
