Vegan Bodega Coming to the Lower East Side
It’s a big week for vegans living on the Lower East Side. Tuesday morning, we broke news that Little Lad’s Cafe, which previously operated in the Financial District, is opening its cheap-eats outpost at the historic Templo Adventista del Septimo church on Forsyth Street. Today, we can bring word that a new convenience store catering to vegans is reportedly on its way to the neighborhood. It’s called Vegan Bodega.

Vegan Bodega was conceived by stay-at-home dad (and former photographer assistant) Eric Hopf as a way to offer a one-stop shop for vegan groceries. The idea is reportedly in the preliminary planning stages, but Hopf is already seeking grassroots funding via IndieGoGo, with a targeted goal of $15,000; so far about 12% has been raised. Those who donate are essentially providing the necessary capital to secure the space and stock the shelves. Even though location is unknown at the moment, the Brooklyn resident promises that it’ll be in the East Village/Lower East Side. Opening date is about two months from now.
It’s an ambitious aim, especially given his plans – offering standard vegan product alongside specialty items like by-the-pound Field Roast and Daiya cheese. Hard-to-find toiletries and household cleaners are also on the agenda. In addition, Hopf is considering beer sales and a partnership with a CSA to provide the store with fresh fruits and vegetables.
