Sal’s Little Italy Two Weeks from Opening at 384 Broome

Denizens of Little Italy suffered a brief scare last May when subtle leasing signs appeared on the second level brick edifice of 369 Broome Street, current home of decades-old Sal’s. The twin plaques advertised (and still do) that the corner property at Mott Street was looking for a replacement occupant as of January 1, 2012. We learned soon thereafter that the classic red-sauce pizzeria was not closing shop, rather relocating to newer digs down the street at the old Umberto’s Clam House. The stubborn last frontier of historic Little Italy – Mulberry Street.

Now six months later, contractors on scene inform us that Sal’s Little Italy is a mere fortnight from opening at 384 Broome Street. Supposedly, although likely longer. The longtime corner exposure was traded for a spot alongside the nascent Crudo Vineria con Cucina. Meanwhile, marquee signage is now up and last-minute preparations already underway.

Do you think 384 Broome is a better location for Sal’s?
