Screwtape Hits the Lower East Side
There’s most certainly an explanation for the recent advent of street-style yellow caution tape on upper Orchard. Strands are affixed to various plywood boards and other random street furniture, framing the organized mess while boasting the name “Screwtape.” Ooh, the mystery…

Not surprisingly, though, the graffiti is a stunt ahead of an upcoming exhibit at the Krause Gallery on Orchard – “Emerging to Established, Old and New Works Group Show.” The Screwtape identity itself is actually the street artist alter-ego of Carl Paoli, who also doubles (pun intended) as a professional stuntman in Hollywood.

Paoli is seemingly a hot commodity in cinema circles, sought for kickass scenes in high profile movies. His resume includes doubling for the likes of Jimmy Fallon, Richard Gere, Patrick Swayze (RIP), Matthew Broderick, Jason Bateman, and Heath Ledger (RIP), among others.
“Emerging to Established, Old and New Works Group Show” features items from a collection of artists, and premieres at the Krause Gallery on February 1.
