Rhong Tiam Express on Orchard Folds
Nothing seems to work inside the southernmost sub-level space at 154 Orchard Street. It’s hexed. Ever since Jeeb Thai Tapas shut down, four failed concepts drank the Kool Aid here, so to speak. Michael “Bao” Huynh lifted the veil on Bia Garden in August 2009, but decided to change the culinary concept one year later to tacos (Chinito). The idea quickly fizzled, and Andy n Bao was the replacement that never happened.
Instead, the business was sold to Rhong Tiam. The mini-chain opened its Express/Garden outpost in April 2011, complete with a not-so-secret backroom dining space. It, too, was short-lived, and closed on January 31. Another venture is on deck…

Monday evening, an as-yet-untitled Chinese restaurant will be seeking wine and beer privileges from Community Board 3. The venture will have one bar with eight seats and a food counter up front, and an accompanying twelve-foot bar in the back. Plans call for minimal seating – 14 tables for 36 people – and hours of operation from 11 am to 2 am daily.
