Streit’s Matzo Rush Before Passover [Video]
Eighty-seven years later and a few shutter scares to its name, Streit’s Matzo is still kicking it old school on the Lower East Side. The current environment around the bakery, which occupies space in the four adjoining tenements of 148-154 Rivington Street, has changed considerably in recent years, thanks to the onslaught of gentrification and its army of bars and condos.

The Streit’s Matzo factory is always a worrisome topic to approach, since we don’t wanna jinx its unlikely holdout status in this neck of the woods. Nevertheless, with Passover looming just a day away, all eyes (and pens) are turning once again to this Rivington relic. As is the case every year.

The Daily News published a piece on Sunday, quoting co-owner and great grandson of Streit, Alan Adler – “We think it’s important to maintain our history and our roots. The neighborhood is changing. We’re one of the last holdouts from the early 20th century.”
Last weekend we stepped into the factory store, and were met by large crowds shopping for the holiday. Tourists, families, and neighborhood shoppers all stocking up on Kosher for Passover provisions. The child within us mosied on over to the mouth of the warehouse where fresh sheets of matzo were loaded into the overhead carousel for packing.
An average of 2,000 pounds of matzo per hour is produced here on the Lower East Side. Yeah, you read that right.
