It was no doubt one of the shortest-lived concepts on the block. Papaya Food opened for a hot minute at 249 Broome Street, but shuttered just as quickly. No announcements to the neighborhood, just a quiet passing. The storefront sat dormant with gates drawn; a record quickie closure of a mere two months.

Now the space is on the rebound as a similar culinary concept.

On separate occasions last month, workers inside informed us that a likeminded Japanese eatery would soon open here, and that it was of no relation to Papaya. Despite the stubborn presence of branded awning and flag. Its fate was confirmed, however, with the release of application materials to Community Board 3 earlier this month. Looks like some monosyllabic competition is in the works for this stretch of Broome – Jin will go up against cross-street newcomer Zest, which proposes six tables and a sushi counter. No stand-up bar. Ownership is gunning for a wine and beer license tonight.

Meanwhile, the entire store is undergoing gut renovations as we speak.
