With the help of a vast personal archive, Eva Silverman planted her family tree, so to speak, at the Carlton Arms Hotel as part of a long-term art project called “Mapping Roots.” For the next five years, the installation will shed light on one family’s New York story, from the bowels of the Lower East Side to Bensonhurst.
This quest to chronicle was hatched six years ago when the New Jersey native started scanning her dad’s collection of slides and negatives. In the wake of the Mapping Roots launch, Silverman was kind enough to send along a digital box of choice neighborhood-specific snaps from the family photo trove (father and uncle). The selections republished here illustrate the Lower East Side and Chinatown environs between roughly the late 1960s and 1970s.
