The preliminary stage of demolition is already underway at 227 Cherry Street. A massive plywood fence was recently constructed around the perimeter of the Pathmark parcel, including the parking lot itself. Illuminated signage was pried from the facade months ago, leaving only the ghost of the grocer which was a thirty-year lifeblood for many in the immediate surroundings (despite the dinginess factor).

Extell Development Company purchased the Cherry Street land last year for an estimated $150 million (less than the earlier projections). The official address for the project, though, is actually 250 South Street … you know, for the glamour of it. Worried neighbors fear the arrival of luxury towers onsite and the possible elimination of a budget supermarket.
Extell chief Gary Barnett actually grew up on the Lower East Side, so let’s see how that factors into his calculus. Probably not at all.
