[ Sub Pop]Sub Pop, the label that first brought the world the grunge rock of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney is turning 25 years old. To celebrate the occasion, the classic imprint has put together a weekend of festivities dubbed “Sub Pop’s Silver Jubilee.” They’ve hooked up with listener-powered radio station KEXP, and are kicking off the bash today by broadcasting the very first rooftop gig from the Space Needle observation deck.
KEXP DJ’s John Richards and Kevin Cole will broadcast live from the Space Needle’s observation deck, hosting a Sub Pop centric set, featuring music and interviews from artists & collaborators from throughout the label’s history. The broadcast will also feature live, rooftop performances including a plugged-in set from Mudhoney. The performances will be the first ever recorded atop the Space Needle. The broadcast will also feature interview highlights from label founder Bruce Pavitt, Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil (it should be noted both are KCMU/KEXP alumni), as well as legendary photographer Charles Peterson, and producer Jack Endino.
The good news is you don’t have to be in Seattle to be a part of it. The Space Needle broadcast begins at 3pm EST. Live performances will be hitting the airwaves as follows (in EST):
4pm – Sera Cahoone
6pm – J. Mascis
8pm – Mudhoney
