Yesterday we showed you an awesome video of “gritty” Lower East Side in the late eighties. Now here’s a clip that takes us back a decade earlier to Max’s Kansas City. Kinolibrary also published this narrated short (circa 1970) on YouTube showing a thin slice of life at the legendary downtown hangout. Its candidness is refreshing, exposing a more tame vision of the establishment. Squint hard enough and you’ll spot Candy Darling, Patti Smith, and Robert Mapplethorpe.
Everything in this world [of Max’s] is, at the same time, both common and pretentious. This floating state of existence produces improvised situations in which individuals suddenly flare up.
Let’s do the time warp again…
Max’s Kansas City was previously located at 213 Park Avenue South.
