Know the owner.  Above: Mazumdar from The Masala Wala always looking to please.  Back in 2011 we had lost Indian takeout Khushie Kitchen but gained The Masala Wala, a sitdown/takeout Desi streetfood restaurant on Essex Street.

This little gem may be lurking on a dark stretch of Essex Street near Element Lounge but it’s one of my favorite quality spots to visit and easy on the wallet.  Look no further if you like chai tea or lassis.  My most recent late night trip I had a Lion Stout (must try beer from Sri Lanka) and an Indian wrap-the Paneer Bhurji Roll with grated cottage cheese sauteed with ginger, garlic, tumeric, coriander, and spices.
