Banksy hit the backyard of the Lower East Side yesterday, an area that gained instant worldwide recognition. The mysterious street artist glued his latest wheat-paste to the facade of 18 Allen Street, a not-so-subtle announcement of his intent to create a show exclusively on the streets of New York (“Better Out Than In: An Artists Residency on the Streets of New York”). What better place than here to start?

However, by last night, the back-hoisted boys were quickly vandalized, and the “graffiti is a crime” sign removed from the masonry. That took longer that we thought it would.
Drop a line if you discover Banksy’s next piece.
Update: AnimalNY shows that Smart Crew swapped out the sign early this morning. But now the entire thing is scraped clean, as Gothamist notes.
