Orchard Hell Building Construction Busts Open Sewer Grate on Orchard Street

Lost in the ongoing coverage of the swiftly rising Orchard Hell Building is the dangerous foot trap at the northwest corner of Orchard and Stanton. Thanks to the never-ending ebb and flow of construction vehicles on the block, the sewer grate outside Rosario’s Pizza has been compromised. Neighbors, including activist-photographer Clayton Patterson, maintain that trucks bound for the Hotel Indigo were responsible for causing the partial curb collapse.

The dangerous hole opened toward the end of August and remained exposed for weeks. Traffic cones were at first employed to mark the obstacle, then shamelessly used as a plug. Not long ago, however, this jury-rigged solution of splintered wood appeared. It’s simply a band-aid that’s already coming loose…
