Composting in the neighborhood has gotten a lot easier. Until now, if you wanted to do the right thing, you had to drag your compost to the Union Square Market or over to the Lower East Side Ecology Center on Sundays.
Now you can swing by The NYC Compost Project’s Commuter Composting on the west side of First Avenue between Houston and First Streets, five mornings a week (Monday – Friday, from 8am – 11am). That said, hours are trimmed this week; Commuter Compost is closed this Tuesday and Wednesday morning due to the New Year’s holiday.
For those of you without much space (okay, that’s basically all of us), or those who don’t want to live with the smell of compost in your apartment, you can store your compost in the fridge or freezer.
(This reporter, after putting the kibosh on her spouse’s live worm-composting suggestions, stores compost in reusable plastic bins in the freezer. No muss, no fuss, no flies and definitely no smell.)
