215 Chrystie Street, soon to sprout 25-story building
The lawsuit didn’t work; the sun will be eclipsed on Chrystie Street.
Now that the Sperone Westwater Gallery is no longer a threat to his grandiose plans for 215 Chrystie Street, hotel magnate Ian Schrager is taking a very public victory lap. For Public. His hotel brand. He casually dropped the news last week, via the New York Post, that this 25-story skyscraper would be the first city location for the chain.
Schrager purchased the former Cooper Square Urban Renewal Area development site – currently a garden and parking lot combo – last year for $50 million. Development firm Beyer Blinder Belle, also behind the new Essex Crossing project, has been retained to design the new lodge.
For the record, the Public brand is “designed to be avant-garde but less expensive than many boutique hotels.”
