325 Bowery, July 2013
Peels abruptly shuttered yesterday after two-and-a-half years serving at 325 Bowery. Principals William Tigertt and Taavo Somer told Grub St that they’ve “decided to turn the restaurant over to the landlord.” In a statement, the business partners thanked their loyal customers for the “years of support and memories.”
Meanwhile, Eater is rumormongering that Josh Pickard and Andrew Carmellini are gunning for the space, and hope to create a casual Italian restaurant in the vein of Locanda Verde. We’ll find out for sure in the coming months, as an unknown applicant submitted a full liquor request to Community Board 3, but withdrew at the last minute.
Perhaps the sale of 325 Bowery last summer to Atlas Capital Group had something to do with the closure. Could the real explanation be a rent hike?
