The stairs are moving. Praise the lord!
Last night, we fielded a flurry of emails and comments that the long-overdue escalator in the East Broadway subway station was finally turned on. Repeat: the escalator is now working. Yes’m. It only took a year-and-a-half to complete the fuckin’ thing. Even the escalator at the Bowery BMT station – part of the same capital works project – opened first.
As previously noted, the MTA began construction on the new stair system in August 2012, and scheduled an initial completion date of June 2013. It’s unclear whether recent pressure from local politicians and the public had any effect on the completion date.
Meanwhile, there is still a petition making the rounds that demands action to renovate this oft-neglected station.
