Hanksy held an unauthorized show called “Surplus Candy”url
The other big pun, Hanksy, is now officially in the realm of the mainstream. Indeed, the New York Times finally picked up the trend this weekend, and decided to splash the street artist on the front page of the Sunday Metro section. In it you’ll find a brief history of the dude and his work.
But that’s not all. Capitalizing on the momentum, No Your City released a companion video to Hanksy’s successful “Surplus Candy” event last month (it only lasted a couple hours). The clip is a three-minute behind-the-scenes blitz synchronized to “Lost Weekend” by the So So Glos. Introduced with the phrase – “It took six days and 40+ artists to completely cover the inside of an East Village brownstone. Illegally” – the footage takes the viewer through the paint preparations involved in making the show a reality.
However, the sendoff line informing folks that the 4th Street building is slated for demolition is false. It’s being gutted and remodeled with a new two-floor addition.
