Here’s your chance to ride the Third Avenue El of yore. Sort of.
We came across this rare footage the other day, which offers a brief snapshot of the elevated subway system in operation sometime in the 1930s. The short clip, presumably shot by a passenger, shows the train riding the rails, first in midtown, then eventually down the Bowery.
Note the advertisement for Fletcher’s Castoria, a children’s stomach remedy that had been sold since 1871. According to Forgotten-NY, the product was heavily promoted in the city, and this particular signage is located in Chatham Square.
The Third Avenue El was completely removed from the streetscape on May 12, 1955.
