In Which Biggie Stands Guard on Monroe Street

If you walk eastward on Monroe Street near the Manhattan Bridge, you’ll see it. A 22′ x 16′ banner billboard with an eye-grabbing photo of the Notorious B.I.G. with Twin Towers in the background.
The image – shot by Chi Modu – was installed back in November as part of the ongoing “Uncategorized” street campaign that kicked off last summer. As previously reported, the project is in collaboration with Prince Media Company to help “break down the barriers [to the art world] and bringing the art directly to the people.”

Modu snapped this particular photo in Jersey City in 1997 with the goal of intimating how Biggie was “in the rap world at the time, the king of New York.” What’s creepy, though, is five years later, both he and the Towers would be gone.
The inaugural batch of “Uncategorized” Modu photos remain scattered around downtown and Brooklyn.
