El Sombrero in Ruins Ahead of Restaurant Revamp [PHOTOS]

Gut renovation began at El Sombrero this week, mere days after the plywood fence was constructed onsite. Even though the name and style of the restaurant is ostensibly to remain the same, it’s nonetheless a bitter pill to swallow.
Just look at El Sombrero now. The signage on the Stanton Street frontage was removed and presumably trashed. And here’s a look at the dining room behind the boards.

New ownership led by Jose Almonte and his son Junior (related to original owners) took over the thirty-year-old eatery last month, and promised to keep alive the tradition of cheap Mexican fare. Their plan includes sprucing up the vibe a bit. We’ll see what that means on the other side…
