Rumor: EMM Group Closing The General at 199 Bowery

We are hearing some local chatter that EMM Group is planning to close The General at 199 Bowery. And quite soon, actually.

A purported bartender at The General stokes the rumor mill, telling us that “Now [rumors of closure] has become a reality. We were just told by management the restaurant will be closing this week.”

If true, the news wouldn’t be too shocking. We’ve been saying from the outset that EMM only really cares about Finale, its crown jewel that fetches cash, celebrities, and notoriety. That’s likely why Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm are fighting tooth and nail to legitimize the operation. Plus, Birnbaum even admitted to the State Liquor Authority at the April hearing that they have had to close the restaurant during the day because nobody comes until around 9pm.

Remember that last fall, the SLA moved to revoke EMM’s liquor licenses at 199 Bowery. Most of the infractions cited were related to noise complaints, disorderly conduct, “extending” the license to an unlicensed space in the building. Then last month we learned of allegations the staff tampered with smoke detectors. Despite the apparent severity of these violations, though, the state ultimately settled the beef with a plea amount of approximately $25k.

Birnbaum and Remm then re-approached Community Board 3 to legitimize the club compound, but were again met with denial.
