With its victory over Holy Schnitzel far in the rearview mirror, the Comfort Diner conversion is now underway down at 399 Grand Street. Build-out officially began inside the old Noah’s Ark Deli last Thursday, eradicating pretty much any trace of the predecessor business. Exterior branding remains intact, though.
Owner Ira Freehof tells us that “the aim is to be open before Labor Day.”

Noah’s Ark Deli was the last full service Kosher restaurant on the Lower East Side. Its home of ten years has been a sad sight ever since closure almost a year ago. Despite a pair of pop-ups on premises, the enormous space was pretty much just accumulating dust.
Holy Schnitzel tried to establish a footprint at this address, but the Seward Park Co-op, who owns the retail strip, ultimately chose Comfort Diner. This is the second location for the brand, behind 45th Street near the UN.
