Thanks to Boogie reader DC, we now see that the Mobil gas station at East Houston and Avenue C is now boxed up for the next phase of its life. In due course, the 6,000 square-foot parcel will yield a nine-story condoplex. You know, exactly what Loisaida needs.
We learned ten days ago via EV Grieve that the last gas station in the East Village had closed shop for good. This came as something of a surprise since it was widely reported that construction at 350 East Houston would not begin until the end of 2015.
The new tower will boast forty-five residential units and a 4,550 square-foot retail space.
Exactly two years ago, 350 East Houston sold to the new investment arm of Ivan Hakimian’s brokerage HPNY. The 6,000 square-foot parcel had been owned by the same family (the Seidens) for a half-century.
Our tipster notes – “Sad times indeed when you mourn the passing of a gas station! But the common infrastructure of Alphabet City is slowly being chipped away.”
