More churn to report down in the Orchard Street gallery district…
The Stephan Stoyanov Gallery closed its showroom at 29 Orchard this past June without much warning to the neighborhood. We were told at the time that the eponymous owner – on the block since 2009 – had been struggling to stay afloat. Especially in light of the lawsuit against him by Warhol Factory artist Jane Holzer last summer, which claimed the art dealer mishandled $585,000 in artwork.
Five short months later, we have a gallery replacement. Causey Contemporary relocated from its longtime Grand Street headquarters in Williamsburg, and is now part of the overcrowded Lower East Side scene. Their inaugural exhibit here on lower Orchard is “Curious Remnants,” a showcase of Zane York’s “intricate oil on canvas, oil sketches on paper and charcoal drawings.”
