The Department of Sanitation foothold on Pike Slip at the base of the Manhattan Bridge recently experienced a makeover. This, of course, is a base of operations where the city agency maintains a salt silo for battling winter storms. However, as of last month, there is now a more resident-facing function onsite.
A new “Household Special Waste” drop-off center is now operational. There are three steel shipping containers with collection bins stationed beneath the span. Each is dedicated to the safe disposal of harmful consumer products such as latex paints, alkaline batteries, fluorescent lights, light bulbs, and mercury-containing devices. That upstairs location houses an eye wash station for emergencies, and also doubles as the “office.”
