Macondo on East Houston Was Shuttered by the Taxman Yesterday, but Has Reopened

Macondo on East Houston is kaput, six-and-a-half years after first opening. The taxman (i.e. tax compliance agent) came yesterday and seized its assets without warning. When we happened past the establishment later in the evening, the security gates were drawn and seizure documentation plastered across the facade. The State of New York is now the rightful owner of the assets.
UPDATE: Macondo reopened tonight.
The last post on Macondo’s Facebook page pimps a special menu for Valentine’s Day.
In retrospect, the sudden closure of Rayuela – its sister restaurant – last October now makes perfect sense. It never seemed as though the Allen Street lair planned on reopening after whatever “renovations” were reportedly afoot. Numerous calls in as many weeks always extended the date further onto the horizon. After this news, chances of a homecoming appear slim.

Macondo bowed in the summer of 2008, and quickly became a popular destination. More laid back than Rayuela. Gotta pay those taxes.
So ends the mini empire of owner Hector Sanz here on the Lower East Side.
