The “R” at 218 Bowery now stands for “Rebelle.”

Since its closure last October, the former R Bar space at 218 Bowery has undergone extensive renovation. The entire joint was gutted, and is now in the remodeling phase for the replacement venture. On a recent walkby, we noticed a shit-brown exterior, and newly-appointed dining room with fancy shmancy marble fixtures. And new signage outfront – same housing, different neon typeface. Also, window placard.

As previously reported, a restaurant will soon take the place of R Bar. It’s reportedly called Rebelle, helmed by Daniel Eddy (Spring, in Paris), Andrea Venturelli, and elements of neighbor Pearl & Ash. Little else is known about the cuisine or concept, but they’re already hiring front-of-house positions.

There had been some corporate restructuring a couple years ago that paved the way for this happening. The way we understand it, Bowery House owner Alessandro Zamperdi was co-signed onto the lease sometime last year, but allegedly terminated without prior warning.

R Bar grew out of the former Pioneer, which the owners decided to transform in 2006. They tapped British designer Benjamin Kay for the makeover, resulting in that whole strip club vibe.
