20 Photos from the (Very Different) Lower East Side of the 1980s [PHOTOS]

The Bowery near Prince St.
Thirty-year Lower East Side resident Steve Butcher recently emailed us to share a trove of archival images of the “good old bad days.”
The 88-shot collection – dating back to the early eighties and nineties – further illustrates a neighborhood almost unrecognizable (nay, unfathomable) to today’s residents. We see the context and character that preceded the eventual advent of game-changing eyesores like the Avalon Chrystie/Bowery, New Museum, and Red Square.
Most of the color photos were all snapped between 1980 and 1985; the black-and-whites are from 1996.
