The crowded cafe scene on Clinton Street is gaining another entrant. Cafe Koneko is the latest hopeful on the block, angling to open shop inside the former home of both the Bang Bang tattoo studio and WAKA WAKA at number 26.
Cafe Koneko (meaning kitten in Japanese) is pitched as a six-table establishment with one bar (four stools), according to application materials submitted to Community Board 3. It’s only going for wine and beer privileges, so will likely be a shoo-in. Principal Benjamin Kalb notes in the paperwork that they’ll serve “breakfast food such as baked goods, oatmeal, fresh fruit” and for lunch/dinner, “Chirashi, Hiyayakko, salads, and sandwiches.”
Meanwhile, Cafe Koneko has plenty of likeminded competition now on upper Clinton Street. There are already a plethora of java joints within spitting distance – Brunswick, Pause Cafe, Cocoa Bar, Marm Cafe, Black Cat Coffee, and Atlas Cafe.
Possibly another cat cafe…
