Thirteen years in one place, the Clinton Street Baking Company is poised to stretch its proverbial legs with the new corner annex at East Houston. But not just yet. Wintertime predictions pegged the debut as sometime in March, but gut renovation is taking much longer than anticipated, it seems. Just a few weeks ago, there was no floor to speak of. However, the concrete floor-filler was poured last week. Owner Dede Lahman had previously told us that launch was set for June, but now there is no timetable.

It can’t be too far off, though.

As part of the expansion plans, the current dining room will be reconfigured to accommodate takeout and coffee, with some limited seating options. Full sit-down service, however, will shift to 2 Clinton Street, a dining room with 23 additional chairs. Meanwhile, a full liquor license for the additional room is also on the way. Community Board 3 approved the application last July, despite its complicated footing in a saturated area. It was then that co-owner Neil Kleinberg admitted the company had its eye on the cornershop since the very beginning. But the longstanding Min’s Market had always been in the way (until last year).

Queue crowding remains a concern among some locals, but ownership previously promised that the larger dining space, coupled with bench sidewalk seating at the corner of Clinton and East Houston, will help alleviate the wait situation.
