Steve Croman, a reviled landlord who, for years, profited on the backs of his tenants, now faces the music. He was charged with twenty felonies including grand larceny, falsifying business records, tax fraud, conspiring to defraud, and offering a false instrument; his mortgage broker Barry Swartz faces fifteen felonies including grand larceny, falsifying records, and conspiring to defraud. The two face up to twenty-five years in prison.
This is vindication for the dozens of tenants whose lives were ruined by this man and his practices. May they receive the maximum penalty.
There is a simultaneous civil lawsuit brought against Croman, too, for routinely employing threats and frivolous lawsuits in a concerted effort to boot rent regulated tenants.
