WTF is going on at Chinatown Soup? We thought this was an “arts space for the neighborhood,” not a breeding ground for violence.

For the second time in as many weeks, we hear about another troublesome occurrence near the gallery-events space. Last Friday night, a birthday party turned into mayhem after rumors circulated that rapper Theophilous London was in attendance (we couldn’t confirm he was); today brings word of another rowdy night with loud DJs and purported underage drinking this past Saturday. Not to mention the brawl that erupted just down the block.

Several readers alerted us to the altercation.

Check out the below video a livid neighbor submitted. You can clearly see the fisticuffs happening on Canal Street. Our tipster notes that the perpetrators were potentially affiliated with a nighttime event at Chinatown Soup. And the accompanying photos show the police response with spotlights on the front of the premises.

Our tipster also tells us that the street fight was preceded by alleged harassment at the Chinese bodega at the southeast corner of Orchard Street. One of the suspected fighters purportedly told the shopkeeper, “I am from Harlem you Chinese bitch.” (That hasn’t been confirmed, though.)

Chinatown Soup owner Michelle Marie Esteva had no comment on the incident.
