A cab heist at the corner of Essex and Grand Streets yesterday morning nearly turned deadly after the perp sped away crosstown and crashed in Battery Park forty minutes later. Three people were injured, including the suspect.
Cops say the incident began at 7:45am when the suspect hailed a taxi on Grand Street near Allen. After driving two blocks east, he alerted the driver that there was a flat tire. When the cabbie went out to check, the perp reportedly jumped in the front seat and commandeered the ride.
According to ABC News, the man burned rubber across Lower Manhattan before slamming into a white Lexus SUV at Chambers and West Streets, “tossing that SUV on top of the median, nearly flipping it over.”
The Lexus driver, passenger, and the suspect were all hospitalized. The latter was also arrested onsite.
