Seventeen inaugurates its new Bowery showroom tomorrow. Headquartered at 314 Bowery, this Lower East Side outpost is a first for the London-based gallery, which now has an anchor along the trendy thoroughfare. Its first exhibit is a show called “Lies,” featuring the artwork of Marianna Simnett.
According to the official website, Seventeen is a “Modern gallery space hosting regular contemporary exhibitions, artists’ talks and film projections.”
This space in particular was the former headquarters of the Chair Factory. A rent increase drove the company to Brooklyn in April 2015, and the landlord warehoused the location for fifteen months, seemingly to net the highest bidder.
Seventeen joins a crowded arts field peppered with recent area additions like the Andrew Edlin Gallery, Westwood Gallery, and the new home of Pop Gallery across the way.
