Five Years Later, Carhartt WIP is Moving Around the Corner to Lafayette Street
Five years after its SoHo debut on Crosby Street, Carhartt is moving its Work in Progress-branded store one block east. The company literally planted a flag at 284 Lafayette Street earlier this month, and contractors have been feverishly readying the space.
An employee tells us that the store “outgrew its space,” so corporate decided to go bigger. Carhartt is reportedly gunning for a March 9 opening.
Carhartt WIP is a street-style (i.e. skater) extension of the Dearborn-based construction site brand. It was originally founded as an alternative for “consumers in Europe and Asia who value refined details and design that remain true to Carhartt brand origins.” So, it joins a block of its peers with Supreme and Diamond Supply Co. on either side.
And thus ends the year-plus retail drought in this particular space. The Geralynn Madonna boutique previously called 284 Lafayette home, having debuted in May 2012. It held on for about four years, but moved uptown to East 60th Street in January 2016.
