Police are still after a man they say attempted to rape a woman near her Lower East Side home.
(This is the story ABC-7 reporter CeFaan Kim was filing when a man in a hockey mask jumped him on live television.)
The suspect reportedly followed her home to 139 Norfolk Street just after midnight Friday morning, shadowed her up the stairs, shoved her through the door, and groped her. He tried to remove her clothes but met resistance, then fled the scene.
The 7th Precinct released surveillance footage of the perp, who is described as being about 28 to 34-years-old, stands roughly 5-foot-10 inches to 6 feet, and 170 to 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a brown waist-length jacket and black jeans.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at nypdcrimestoppers.com.
This attempted rape is the latest in a recent spat of area crime. One man is still wanted for mugging four different Chinese women. and lest we forget the violent brawl last weekend that happened on this same block.
Overall, serious crime is higher in the 7th Precinct. According to NYPD Compstat data, rapes on the Lower East Side are up 50% year-over-year.
