‘Yummy Kitchen’ on Hester Street Fades After More than 2 Decades
The pace of area closures is brutal of late. Many longtimers are fading from the streetscape. The latest to bite the dust is Cheung Wong Kitchen (aka 38 Yummy Kitchen) at the corner of Allen and Hester Streets.
Signage was removed from the storefront weeks ago, but the closure is confirmed by the leasing banner above the storefront. It appears they closed shortly before Lunar New Year celebrations and did not reopen.
Cheung Wong Kitchen, considered by many to be one of the last of its kind in the vicinity, had been around since at least the early 1990s. It served up cheap, yet delicious Cantonese-style comfort food. The windows were always steamed up, and the little space jammed with customers.
It’s also worth noting that Cheeky Sandwiches owner Din Yates is angling to open a burrito shop in the same building, but around the corner on Allen Street.
