For the Lower East Side, ‘Where Goes the Neighborhood?’
“There goes the neighborhood” is probably the most common cliche when discussing neighborhood gentrification. Each generation tends to label game-changing events as so cataclysmic that the end of status quo is predicted (e.g. Marshalls opening next to Katz’s Deli).
But where?
Artist and street commentator Adrian Wilson posed the statement above the Cheese Grille on Allen Street, on the marquee that previously showcased the mural by Brooklyn-based, Iranian stencil artists Icy & Sot. The huge lettering spans the entire length of the storefront, and is impossible to miss.
