Behold the New Essex Crossing Senior Building

Another building in the Essex Crossing roster is across the finish line. The new senior center at 140 Essex Street (Site 8) is mostly free from its construction obstruction.

Have a look.

There are a total of 92 affordable studio units in the eight-story residence. A lottery lauched over the summer, eligible to senior households (age 62+) earning between zero and sixty percent of Area Median Income. Residents living in Community Board 3 received preference for fifty percent of the housing stock, with an additional priority granted to former SPURA site tenants displaced in the 1960s.

Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle, the eight-story mixed-use tower at 140 Essex is over two years under construction, and sits atop the ashes of a former Essex Street Market building. Residents will have access to a second-floor residential terrace, laundry room, and eighth-floor library. It’s expected to debut later this year.

There is also 9,645 square-feet of ground-level retail space for the taking. The Magician bar is already planning to occupy some of that footprint as part of its latest expansion plan.
